June - A Novel | Book Review

I received this book complimentary from the website Blogging for Books for review purposes. After reading the excerpt of this book on their website I thought that it sounded intriguing and a possible good read but once I received the book and started to read it I was sadly mistaken. While others could easily enjoy this book, I found it to be rather hard to get into personally.

The book is basically composed of two different stories, the past and the present, and it is always jumping back and forth between them. This got a bit confusing and irritating for me because I found it rather hard to follow at some points. There are many books that I have read that have multiple story lines that it jumps through and I can follow those easily but the back and forth between the two different places in time got a bit confusing.

Plot line wise the book was pretty decent as I got further into the book and more of the characters were introduced. I mean, who doesn't like a story about family mysteries, a bit of history, murder and more? Personally I always love a good mystery which I think stems from many years of watching Murder She Wrote with my grandmother growing up.

While it was a sometimes confusing yet interesting read it is not a book that I will end up keeping on my shelves and will donate to my local library. I share books with my grandmother sometimes when I think that she might enjoy them as well and she had the same things to say about it as well. Particularly that it was rather slow and hard to get into especially at the beginning. But I think that if you find the excerpt below interesting to at least give it a try because everyone likes different types of books and might find it far more entertaining than I we did.

Book Excerpt:
"Twenty-five-year-old Cassie Danvers is holed up in her family’s crumbling mansion in rural St. Jude, Ohio, mourning the loss of the woman who raised her—her grandmother, June. But a knock on the door forces her out of isolation. Cassie has been named the sole heir to legendary matinee idol Jack Montgomery's vast fortune. How did Jack Montgomery know her name? Could he have crossed paths with her grandmother all those years ago? What other shocking secrets could June’s once-stately mansion hold?

Soon Jack’s famous daughters come knocking, determined to wrestle Cassie away from the inheritance they feel is their due. Together, they all come to discover the true reasons for June’s silence about that long-ago summer, when Hollywood came to town, and June and Jack’s lives were forever altered by murder, blackmail, and betrayal. As this page-turner shifts deftly between the past and present, Cassie and her guests will be forced to reexamine their legacies, their definition of family, and what it truly means to love someone, steadfastly, across the ages."
