Meet the Blogger Behind: Floral Republic

Good morning! Who's ready to meet this weeks blogger? I hope you are because this week we are meeting 23 year old Natalie Garland and her blog Floral Republic. If you love looking at various types of pictures and have a passion for beauty than I would definitely suggest giving her blog a run through because I have been enjoying perusing through her pictures. And her post about working out on water was seriously new and interesting to read about.

1.       What or who inspired you to create your blog?
I was at university doing a journalism degree and my lecturers kept telling me that to get into journalism you really had to prove you were interested in writing and do it full-time as a hobby, not just as as a university subject.  They said the best way to stand out and get noticed was to start a blog, but at the time I was feeling quite unmotivated and didn't know what to write about. At the time I was living with four boys and, having always been an avid fan of fashion and beauty, I would sometimes come home from a shopping spree and show them my "haul" or tell them how excited I was to have bought a new foundation - but they would be glued to their XBox and not really care. Then I thought  'there must be other people out there like me who are genuinely interested in my new purchases' so I put up a few pictures of my shopping spree online and took it from there!

2.       What is your #1 favorite thing about blogging and why?
All the lovely people I have met. I've been lucky enough to attend blogger events in Birmingham and Nottingham (while I was at university), in Southampton (while living at home with my parents), and in London (where I currently live) and at each one I have met lots of different people with similar interests to me. I never usually get nervous going to blog events, despite the fact I won't know anyone there, because I am always so excited to meet new people and I find it so easy to get along with fellow bloggers. Personally, I am more likely to visit someone's blog after I have met them because I can match their personality to their writing and imagine them saying what they have written!

3.       What main topics do you blog about?
I started blogging mainly about beauty but I now do the odd outfit post and write a lot about health and fitness after getting more into fitness over the last year. I'm hoping to include a lot more travel-related posts on my blog this year too (if my bank balance allows me to go on more holidays!)

4.       When you’re not blogging, what do you enjoy doing?
I enjoy going running and trying out different gym classes. I'm a very outdoorsy person and love discovering new places - I recently moved to London a couple of months ago so I spend most of my weekends going to a different area of London and doing some exploring!

5.       What has been your favorite place to visit and explore?
Probably Prague, it's such a magical place! I also love the Greek islands. I haven't done a lot of travelling though - Greece is the furthest away from home I have been! I would like to go to America or Mexico one day.

6.       Do you blog as a hobby or is it your job?
Just as a hobby. I work full time so try to fit blogging in when I can but I have taken it a lot more seriously over the last couple of years. I went through a phase where I completely stopped blogging for a few months to take a break from it but am now so much happier with it.

7.       Where would you like to take your blog in 5 years?
I would like to learn a lot more about things like SEO, analytics, follow links etc. When I first started blogging I wasn't interested in traffic or stats as it was just for me, to prove I enjoyed writing. Now I am starting to take a lot more interest in social media and would like to grow the traffic to my blog over the next five years.

8.       What has been the hardest thing that you’ve encountered since you began blogging?
Not feeling "good enough". I've been to a few events where everyone knows each other and people didn't want to talk to you because they had never heard of you or your blog. I also went to another event where loads of brands were exhibiting and you essentially had to go up to them and sell yourself - if they liked you they would speak to you about how you could work together and collaborate, if they didn't they would give you a dirty look and move on to the next person. It put me on a bit of a downer at the time but I have now learnt not to compare myself with others and just to focus on what I am doing and not what others are doing - and it's a lot better that way!

9.       From your experience, what’s one tip that you would give to a new blogger?
Keep at it and get involved with as many twitter chats, blogger Facebook groups and link shares as possible! There will be times you will feel uninspired or not be sure if your blog is going anywhere but the more you stick with it the more it will be worth it.

10.   What are your top 3 must watch tv shows?
I don't actually watch a lot of television (and don't have Netflix!) so I usually prefer to just have TV on in the background and just have something easy to watch like First Dates! I love David Attenborough programs and nature documentaries as well.

11.   What is something about you or that you that makes you unique?
A lot of people think I look German or Swedish and a woman on the bus once stopped me to ask if I was English. I just have naturally very blonde hair and blue eyes!

12.   Do you have a historical or currently living icon that you look up to? Why?
I look up to my grandparents because they are so in love and have been through everything together.

13.   What is the one blog post that you are the most proud of hitting the publish button on?
Probably my first ever OOTD day post. It was three years ago and was my firs t time trying something different on my blog. I had only just started blogging and It didn't get many views but I was so pleased with 9 comments! http://www.thefloralrepublic.com/2013/03/ootd-jade-green.html

14.   What is your favorite season and the one thing that you look forward to during it each year?
Summer, always! I love the sunshine, being able to spent more time outdoors and hopefully go on a summer holiday!

Thank you Natalie for sharing some things about you and your blog and letting us get to know you.

You can keep up to date with Natalie by following her on: Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and of course her blog.
